Midlife Minute: Don’t Fast-Forward Through Commercials

Published in: Cardiovascular Health, commercials, Exercise, Fitness, TV watching, Walking
Walk Your Way Through the Commercial Breaks
(Photos.com)

I don’t know about you, but I’ve gotten to the point of taping the TV shows that I want to watch, since many of them are on too late for me and I invariably fall asleep at those crucial don’t-miss moments. All that time invested, only to miss the best part…

And there’s that time-efficiency bonus too: A one-hour show can just take 40 minutes or less by fast-forwarding through the commercials.

The next time you’re tempted to do the same thing, consider this:

Research has found that people who walk in place during commercials over the course of an hour-long show walked an average of 25 minutes, burned 148 calories and took roughly 2,100 steps (equal to about a mile).

These so-called commercial breaks are perhaps a signal for you to take a break from the couch and move (even if you feel like you’re not going anywhere!)

Good idea! I don’t watch TV but when we sometimes watch on the Internet I will put this advice into practice!

I had never thought of this. Usually I get up during commercials and do chores. My husband zaps to other channels, which gets on my nerves.

I don’t watch much TV. Plus, I don’t know how to work the recorder thingie. Guess that means I’ll be exercising during commercials WHEN I do watch television.

Oh, good tips. I’ve gotten used to fast forwarding too and not getting up.

This is really a good tip. I often tell myself I’m going to do all sorts of things when I watch TV– stretch, jumprope etc. But I find once I get sucked into the couch, that’s where I stay.

How about you do this during part of the show? We only watch Netflix so we’re commercial free at our house.

What a great suggestion. I’m one of those who only watches recorded shows, and really enjoy zipping through the commercials, but I could walk while the show is on and not really miss anything.

nice tip, Sheryl, thanks — and it would also work for those segments about upcoming shows and sponsors that run on public television…

I like the idea of using the commercial to move about, but not to watch it!

I, um, don’t walk during commercials, but I like a lot of them so don’t mind watching. Like this one:

speaks realistically about what happens when we approach our 50’s and beyond

I think your website is GREAT!  It's hard to find an online space that speaks realistically about what happens when we approach our 50's and beyond.  Keep writing, and thanks for your support."

I’m writing to express my admiration for the work you are doing!

I'm a young medical writer trying to get a foothold in the industry, so the portfolio you have on your website showcasing your accomplishments is something that I'm aiming to achieve.

I don't want to take up too much of your time, but I am hoping you can share some advice, tips, or guidance as I work on this, my lateral career change!

Thanks for taking the time to read this - I know you probably have much more exciting things to be doing, but just know that your work is inspiring me to continue down this writing path.
