Menopause and Vaginal Dryness

Published in: Estrogen therapy, How to treat vaginal dryness, Mona Lisa Touch, Topical estrogen for vaginal dryness, Vaginal atrophy, Vaginal dryness, What to do about vaginal dryness

I’m not going to beat around the bush. (Okay, I realize that is a not-so-funny pun.)

Why not get right to the point? Menopause brings many changes, and one of the peskiest being a change in the way your vagina feels, which can lead to itchiness, dryness, irritation (which can even lead to bleeding), and trouble with intercourse. It’s just no fun getting old. But hey, at least we have loads of different lubes like this adam and eve lube, for example, oh and vaginal moisturizers on the market these days. Back decades ago, we wouldn’t have access to this, not natural and non-harmful substances anyway!

Blame estrogen, or a lack thereof.

So many women remain silent about this; too embarrassed to bring it up to their healthcare providers. So many healthcare providers stay silent about it, too. Maybe they are embarrassed, too – or perhaps they’re unprepared, or too rushed – to bring it up to their patients. A recent study found that only half of postmenopausal women discuss their symptoms, with far fewer seeking treatment. However, you have to understand this happens to every female, more or less. It even happens to women that feature professionally or at an amateur level on sites similar to Sex Free HD as one example. Just always keep in mind that there can always be ways to remedy such changes and symptoms.

It’s time to be proactive. Here’s what you need to know:

  1. Stop using soap on the inner parts of your vulva; clean water is adequate for washing, says the North American Menopause Society, who also suggests using only white, unscented toilet paper.
  2. Wash your underwear in detergents free of dyes and/or perfumes.
  3. Avoid fabric softeners.
  4. Stay away from using lotions and perfumed products on the inner vulva.
  5. Avoid douches and/or bubble baths.

Some women opt for oral estrogen hormone therapy (HT), which can help with these symptoms, but if you’d rather not go that route, there are other choices:

  1. Over-the-counter lubricants and moisturizers, like Replens or Vagisil.
  2. Topical low-dose vaginal estrogen. The estrogen contained in these creams, rings or tablets is delivered directly to where it needs to go with minimal absorption to the rest of your body, so any possible side effects from taking it orally are greatly minimized. If you’ve had breast cancer, mention this to your healthcare provider; but in general, experts agree that it is a safe treatment.
  3. Mona Lisa Touch. A new in-office procedure, this FDA-cleared laser therapy delivers fractional CO2 energy to generate new collagen to your vaginal wall. It can also be used by women who have experienced premature menopause induced by chemotherapy, or by women who have had a hysterectomy. Usually a series of three five-minute procedures spaced six weeks apart are necessary, with an annual maintenance treatment advised; many women experience favorable results after just one treatment. However, they will need to continue treatment after their initial visit, some vaginal treatments will need continued use, not just a dip, and will need frequent visitations to the doctor during treatment.

I did try the estrogen cream for a short time. It did help. Thanks for the information about the detergents, etc. I didn’t know that!

I think your website is GREAT!  It's hard to find an online space that speaks realistically about what happens when we approach our 50's and beyond.  Keep writing, and thanks for your support."

I’m writing to express my admiration for the work you are doing!

I'm a young medical writer trying to get a foothold in the industry, so the portfolio you have on your website showcasing your accomplishments is something that I'm aiming to achieve.

I don't want to take up too much of your time, but I am hoping you can share some advice, tips, or guidance as I work on this, my lateral career change!

Thanks for taking the time to read this - I know you probably have much more exciting things to be doing, but just know that your work is inspiring me to continue down this writing path.
