Ho Ho… Ho?

Published in: Happiness, Holiday Cheer, Midlife, Moods

Please don't call me a Scrooge (okay, go ahead if you must), but since the holiday hoopla started just about the time Halloween was winding down, I'm really tired of it by now. The endless catalogs cluttering my mailbox; the flash sale pop-ups  each time I turn on  my computer  - they're like those pesky black flies that keeping dodging the swatter and are impossible to kill! - the commercials at … [Read more...] about Ho Ho… Ho?

Midlife Minute: Don’t Fast-Forward Through Commercials

Published in: Cardiovascular Health, commercials, Exercise, Fitness, TV watching, Walking

I don't know about you, but I've gotten to the point of taping the TV shows that I want to watch, since many of them are on too late for me and I invariably fall asleep at those crucial don't-miss moments. All that time invested, only to miss the best part... And there's that time-efficiency bonus too: A one-hour show can just take 40 minutes or less by fast-forwarding through … [Read more...] about Midlife Minute: Don’t Fast-Forward Through Commercials

Keeping Thanksgiving Leftovers Healthy

We usually have way too much food for Thanksgiving. But we know that in advance. One of the reasons we overcook is so we have leftovers. I don't know exactly why, but I enjoy leftovers way more than I enjoy the food the first time around. And despite the fact that I know it's nice to give departing guests a doggie bag, I get rather possessive of my leftovers... Our Thanksgiving was a small affair … [Read more...] about Keeping Thanksgiving Leftovers Healthy

Do You Lie About Your Age? Should You?

I don't like lying. I don't do it well, either. But I do realize that there are certain times when it comes in handy. Like when a friend asks, "Does this dress make me look fat?" for instance. You can't just say, "Yes, as a matter of fact, it really does;" even though that might be the answer. Or, maybe you can. But me? I try hard to say something like, "Well, I've seen you wear other things that … [Read more...] about Do You Lie About Your Age? Should You?

Midlife Minute: Being Fit Matters NOW

Published in: Cardiovascular Health, Chronic Diseases, Fitness, Health, Midlife

Do you have aging parents? I do, and to watch them suffer with various ailments is so heartbreaking. Living to an old age, while a blessing, is in many ways so very difficult - it's a good thing places like https://www.immanuel.com/ exist to help the elderly in need of assisted living. It can be hard especially if you're plagued with ongoing health problems. That's one thing to keep in mind if … [Read more...] about Midlife Minute: Being Fit Matters NOW

Simple Thanks

I think I grossly overestimated my so-called abilities. It seems that the longer this &^x*@#! cast stays on my arm, the tougher it's getting to work and to type. What's changed? Not sure...certainly not the hardness of the cast nor the uncomfortable position of my arm - but perhaps my patience and fortitude. Have I lost my ability to look on the bright side?  (The good news: the cast is … [Read more...] about Simple Thanks

A Hurricane: Teachable Moments

It's so good to be back here after being absent for what feels like forever. First and most important, I hope that anyone who was in the path of Hurricane Sandy is safe. Although the storm did hit where I live in Connecticut, we're faring better than many. My home was without power for five days. It's funny; I knew power would eventually be restored. This was hardly our first experience with … [Read more...] about A Hurricane: Teachable Moments

Easy Ways to Care for Your Teeth

What happens when you grow up in the 50s and 60s, well before things like fluoride, sealants and flossing were di rigeur? Well before parents were on top of their kids' every move, knowing each time they had a bowel movement? And well before we knew that. like your health, you also couldn't take your teeth for granted? If you're anything like me, you end up as an adult with lots of root canals, … [Read more...] about Easy Ways to Care for Your Teeth

The Bright Side

I got a new cast this morning - one that is a bit less cumbersome and clunky. At least my elbow is free to move and I can see more of my fingers (which still resemble sausages, only slightly paler and more delicate ones than before). If I twist my left (casted) hand into a certain position,  I can reach some keys on my computer and type using both hands, to a degree. But  ouch! That position hurts … [Read more...] about The Bright Side

Feeling Vulnerable

I recently  - clad only in a small towel - entertained a roomful of young, strapping able-bodied men in my hotel room.  Some of them were firemen. I don't know about you, but there"s something quite sexy about a guy who will risk his life to save another's, as well as run to the aid of a damsel in distress (no, i didn't mean "undress..." or maybe I did). Intrigued? Curious? Suspicious? Abandon … [Read more...] about Feeling Vulnerable

speaks realistically about what happens when we approach our 50’s and beyond

I think your website is GREAT!  It's hard to find an online space that speaks realistically about what happens when we approach our 50's and beyond.  Keep writing, and thanks for your support."

I’m writing to express my admiration for the work you are doing!

I'm a young medical writer trying to get a foothold in the industry, so the portfolio you have on your website showcasing your accomplishments is something that I'm aiming to achieve.

I don't want to take up too much of your time, but I am hoping you can share some advice, tips, or guidance as I work on this, my lateral career change!

Thanks for taking the time to read this - I know you probably have much more exciting things to be doing, but just know that your work is inspiring me to continue down this writing path.
